STOLLOWEEN Studio is excited to announce our June 2015 Online Workshop schedule.

These workshops are an effective way to learn to work with papier mache on a project specific basis.

 During each session you have the opportunity to watch a live demonstration of the steps needed to complete your project as well as interact by asking questions specific to your particular project.

 The atmosphere is casual and friendly, this is not rocket science, but there is a lot of information covered so be prepared to do a lot of work.

 Please read the workshop technical requirements and registration instructions carefully.

 Online Workshops Require:

  -A computer with high-speed internet access and a webcam, microphone, and headphones. (Please use headphones to reduce feedback)

  -Access to materials required to make paper clay including flour, cellulose insulation, and drywall joint compound.

 Online Workshops Offer:

  -Complete listing of tools and materials.

  -Project templates. (If Applicable)

  -Four live webcam sessions. -Instruction specific to your goals.

Online Papier Mache Zombie Workshop (6 Hours Online Training)

This workshop will show you how to turn recycled cardboard and newspaper into a rotting zombie head.

During the workshop you will learn how to assemble the armature using supplied templates as well as how to sculpt with homemade paper clay.
NOTE: This workshop requires cellulose fiber insulation to make the paper clay used in the process.

Please make sure you have access to this material before registering. 

Price: $100.00 USD per person.

Online Papier Mache Gargoyle Workshop (6 Hours Online Training)

 This workshop will show you how to turn recycled cardboard and newspaper into a large Gargoyle type sculpture.

During the workshop you will learn how to assemble the armature using supplied instructions and how to sculpt with homemade paper clay.

This project can be scaled to any size you desire but be warned that this is a large project  that will require a good amount of work on your end to complete.

 NOTE: This workshop requires cellulose fiber insulation to make the paper clay used in the process.

Please make sure you have access to this material before registering.

 Price: $100.00 USD per person.

Online Hand Armature Workshop (2 Hours Online Training)

 Tuesday, June 23rd, 8 pm – 10 pm EST

 This workshop will show you how to turn recycled cardboard and newspaper into a detailed hand armature than can then be finished using several different papier mache techniques.

 The techniques can be used to create hands suitable for any size prop.

The two hour class will demonstrate the steps needed to create the armature and sculpt details using home made paper clay.

This demonstration will not cover painting techniques.

 NOTE: This workshop requires cellulose fiber insulation to make the paper clay used in the process.

Keeping Warm

The weather outside is frightful, well maybe not scary but it sure is cold. My suggestion is to stay indoors and build props...in this case some scary and evil snowmen.

Kid's Monster Factory

As a child I used to draw monsters and as an adult I continue to doodle monsters every chance I get. This is very special class designed for children 6 to 12 years old who along with an accompanying adult will use their imagination to draw a monster then turn that artwork into a fabulous papier mache sculpture.

During the first two hour session we will look at inspirational monsters in movies and books such as Monsters Inc., Where the Wild Things Are and the Dr. Suess books, then create a drawing and start constructing the sculpture. The second and third sessions will use papier mache and the final class will be painting.

The workshops can be physically demanding requiring participants to stand, kneel, lift and work in uncomfortable positions. Papier mache can be a bit messy so please dress accordingly. The class uses a variety of non-hazardous materials such as flour, glue and joint compound, as well as latex and acrylic paints.

Workshop cost is $100 per adult and child duo which includes all tools and materials.

You are encouraged to bring your own drink and snack. No alcoholic beverages please. Call (989) 750-6457 to register. Payment is due at the first class. Class is limited to 5 adult and child duos.

Ever since I was a kid I loved zombies - I thought they were the best things ever and that was way before it was cool to like zombies.

Join us for four evenings of icky, sticky, rotted zombie building fun. Participants create their own life-sized severed zombie head using a variety of papier mache techniques and commonly found recycled items. During the workshop we will watch and discuss some classic zombie films, occasionally stopping to dissect some of our favorite scenes.

This unique experience is recommended for those 16 years and older. The workshops can be physically demanding requiring participants to stand, kneel,  lift and work in uncomfortable positions. First 2013 Papier Mache Workshop-Zombies

The first papier mache workshop of the season starts next week....still plenty of time to sign up. 

STOLLOWEEN Studio is an inspired work space created for the sole purpose of bringing imagination to life through papier mache. In addition to being a working studio, the facility is also a classroom offering a variety of workshops allowing students to create projects from start to finish.

STOLLOWEEN Studio is open to anyone with a desire to create. Papier mache is a simple medium very capable of producing stunning results even for the first time user. The knowledge, experience and resources available in the studio are second to none.

-Instructor with over 30 years experience in television production and papier mache.

-Large, comfortable and well lit workspace.

-Comprehensive reference library including hundreds of books and publications.

-Gallery displaying many diverse papier mache projects.

-Well stocked equipment and material room.

Been busy the past month as we moved our passion for building papier mache Halloween props to a new studio space at 718 George Street in Midland, Michigan. The studio is open to the public and will serve as a classroom and my personal workshop.

Great Pumpkin Workshop Fun

I’ve been a really crappy blogger the last couple of months, seems that I’ve had to many irons in the fire.

October is our month and I promise to get off my ass and start sharing all the cool things that surround us this time of year.

We are halfway through The Great Pumpkin papier mache workshop.

Everybody seems to be having a good time and there are some very cool pumpkins in the works.

I will do a follow up blog once the workshop wraps.

Great Pumpkin Workshop

Class Description:

Spend four fun filled evenings at Legacy Art Studio and Gallery in Midland Michigan creating your very own papier mache pumpkin.

Scott A. Stoll will teach you a variety of techniques and lead you through the process of building an incredible pumpkin using your own design.

The class is fun, fast paced and chances are good you will make a few new friends during the process.

All tools and materials are supplied and no experience is required.

Disclaimer:

The Great Pumpkin Workshop is recommended for ages 12 and older. Participants will need to use a variety of tools such as scissors, sharp blades and hot glue guns. The class is physical requiring standing, bending and lifting during each three hour session. Please wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing. The workshop uses wheat flour, drywall joint compound, white glue and latex paint and may be unsuitable for those sensitive to these materials.

Just finished three new pumpkins to be displayed at a local art gallery to promote an upcoming papier mache workshop. 


Simple trash bag technique, took about three hours each to complete.

Everything but...

…the kitchen sink.

Over the past year I have taught six papier mache workshops at Space Studios in Midland, MI.

Forty-three students have attended the classes and created dragons, gargoyles, frogs and pumpkins.

The classes are a lot of fun and I get the chance to meet some really creative and talented individuals but the workshops are a lot of work.


In addition to developing each project I must pack and bring all the necessary tools and materials for six to twelve students.

This may not sound like much but when you stop and think about every possible item you may use during the course of three hours you get the idea.

Newspaper, cardboard, scissors, tape, hot glue guns, markers, extension cords, tarps, fans, paste, clay, mixers and on and on.

The hardest part of teaching these workshops is the packing and transport.

The photos show the materials required for one session, each class requires different materials so it’s always a challenge.

FROGGER!

This past week I have been working on developing some projects for some new papier mache workshops that I will be teaching this summer. One of the projects is frogs, large frogs created from a variety of recycled materials such as corrugated cardboard, plastic milk jugs, cereal boxes and lots of newspaper.

By the end of the month I will have five different frogs created. The photos above illustrate the basic shape but there are still numerous accessories to be added such as teeth, tongue and warts plus some unique and creative painting styles.

As soon as the frogs are complete I will post a tutorial on www.stolloween.com, in the meantime I'm also working on some new gargoyles and a couple of other projects that I'm keeping under wraps.

Yeah, the 2009 build is on!
