It Takes All Kinds

I will start out by saying that I’m not the most social person in the world.

Shocking I know.

I’m not shy and I am capable of mingling and carrying on conversations with strangers, it’s that I just don’t go out of my way to make friends with everyone I meet.

When our Halloween display is up we get about one hundred adults that stop by and want to talk about the seasonal decorations in front of them.

I’m cool with that.

Every year a few of the folks stick in my memory, these are the folks that deviate from the normal topics and take the conversation to strange new places.

The" Nativity Scene" Lady

This woman was very pleasant but somehow got the idea that I should use my papier mache skills to make a nativity scene for Christmas.

She said it once, she said it twice…she actually said it seven times (yes I counted) and I was cool with it until she said, “You should make a nativity scene instead of this Halloween crap.”

She lost me right there….she left saying she was coming back in two months to see it.

Little does she know that if I ever did make a nativity scene it probably wouldn’t be what she was expecting.

Do little fuzzy lambs have fangs?

The "You Should Have Done This” Guy

Every year this type of guy visits our display.

Every sentence starts with “You Should Have…”

“You should have made all the eyes light up.”

“You should have made a headless horseman.”

“You should have made this jump out.”

It went on and on.

I wanted to look at him and say, “You should shut up.”

The "Scary" Guy

This is the first year I ever thought we were really going to have a problem.

A man walked up to our front porch (which is behind the display) and approached me with what I can only describe as a gruff tone, appearance and demeanor and asked, “So, what is all this about?”

That's no greeting.....

I braced myself for something bad.

My reply was “It’s just our Halloween display.”

He looked at me, sort of smiled then asked, “Can I take pictures?”

“Sure” I replied.

Off he went a happy camper snapping his photos.

As the old saying goes I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover.

I was thinking "what is that lady thinking?" A nativity scene with a zombie baby Jesus with fangs? Dark angels with devil's tails? What a goof.

I don't understand people.

I really, really, really don't get people.

Like you, I CAN socialize but I am not social. And I think it's because of the people you just described ;)

Man, since I started my yard this year EVERYONE has said you should this, you should that. I wanna say why don't you? lol

you know what would be an awesome nativity scene? a nightmare before christmas themed one. where you have all the characters set up around a new character, a baby Jack or something.
